Business Analyst cover letter example
A business analyst’s cover letter has to show that you can turn messy problems into clear requirements and that the change you specified made a measurable difference.
Opens with the matching business analyst resume, in the same design, so the two read as a set.
The letter, as text
Dear Mr Lowe,
Replacing a core platform tends to fail in the requirements long before it fails in the code. Holloway Life & Pensions is about to begin its policy-administration replacement, and I would like to join as the Senior Business Analyst who makes sure those requirements hold up.
At Northern Mutual Insurance I am leading discovery and requirements for a £4.5M claims-platform replacement across six business units. I have written more than 140 user stories with acceptance criteria and maintain the backlog that three delivery teams work from. Alongside that, I redesigned the motor-claims process with our operations team, bringing average handling time down from 13 to 9 days, a 31% improvement.
I also look for value the business has not spotted yet. Power BI reporting I built on claims leakage identified £620K a year of avoidable payouts. At Pennine Building Society I mapped 40 mortgage-servicing processes in BPMN, found 11 manual hand-offs to automate, and ran user-acceptance testing with 25 branch staff that cleared 96% of defects before go-live.
I hold the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis and am comfortable in Jira, Confluence and SQL. I would welcome the chance to discuss how you plan to phase the migration, and I am available for interview in person or remotely, with one month’s notice to give.
Kind regards,
Olivia Hart
Why this business analyst cover letter works
- The opening line states a hard-won truth about platform projects, which immediately signals experience.
- It quantifies scope (£4.5M, six business units, three delivery teams) so the reader can judge the level of responsibility.
- The leakage and process-mapping examples show the analyst finding problems, not just documenting them.
- UK conventions are used throughout, including spelling, “Mr” without a full stop and the notice period.
Tips for your own business analyst cover letter
- State the size of the programme you worked on and how many teams relied on your requirements, because scale is the first thing a hiring manager checks.
- Include one before-and-after process metric, such as handling time, error rate or manual steps removed.
- Name the methods and artefacts you use, for example BPMN, user stories or UAT, in the context of a real project.
Questions
How long should a business analyst cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 words, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim; every sentence should add proof the resume does not already give.
Do I need a cover letter for a business analyst job?
Send one whenever the application allows it, unless the posting says not to. It is your chance to connect your experience to this employer’s needs, and many candidates skip it.
Can I use this cover letter for free?
Yes. Open it in the builder with the matching resume, replace the details with your own, and download both as PDF or Word, free, with no account and no watermark.
