Teaching Assistant cover letter example
A teaching assistant’s cover letter has to show the school that you can support pupils’ learning and wellbeing with specific methods, and that the pupils you work with make progress.
Opens with the matching teaching assistant resume, in the same design, so the two read as a set.
The letter, as text
Dear Mrs Wardlow,
Larchwood Primary’s advert for an SEN teaching assistant asks for someone confident running phonics interventions and working towards EHCP targets. Those two things make up most of my working week, and I would very much like to bring them to your school.
At Moseley Primary School I support eight pupils with EHCPs across Years 2 to 4, in one-to-one sessions and small groups. I deliver daily phonics interventions using Read Write Inc., and 80% of the pupils in my group reached the expected standard within two terms. I adapt resources with the class teacher and SENCo and track progress against each pupil’s targets, so reviews are based on evidence rather than impressions.
Before Moseley, I worked as a learning support assistant in a Reception class of 30 at Hall Green Infant School, supporting early language and behaviour. I also use Makaton, hold a current paediatric first aid certificate and lead lunchtime and after-school clubs for 30 pupils, which has taught me how much a calm, predictable routine helps children who find school hard.
I would be glad to visit Larchwood, meet your SENCo and see how your interventions are organised. I am available to start in January.
Kind regards,
Amelia Clarke
Why this teaching assistant cover letter works
- It responds directly to the requirements in the advert, phonics and EHCP targets, in the first two sentences.
- The 80% result within two terms gives the head real evidence of impact, which most TA letters lack.
- Named programmes and skills (Read Write Inc., Makaton, paediatric first aid) show readiness without a long list.
- UK terminology and spelling throughout make the letter feel native to an English primary school.
Tips for your own teaching assistant cover letter
- Name the year groups and needs you have supported, and the number of pupils in your caseload.
- Mention the specific programmes you deliver, such as a phonics scheme or a communication system, and one result.
- Show how you work with the class teacher and SENCo, because teamwork with staff is central to the role.
Questions
How long should a teaching assistant cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 words, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim; every sentence should add proof the resume does not already give.
Do I need a cover letter for a teaching assistant job?
Send one whenever the application allows it, unless the posting says not to. It is your chance to connect your experience to this employer’s needs, and many candidates skip it.
Can I use this cover letter for free?
Yes. Open it in the builder with the matching resume, replace the details with your own, and download both as PDF or Word, free, with no account and no watermark.
