Teacher cover letter example

A teaching cover letter has to show that your students learn more in your classroom, with evidence, and that you contribute to the wider school beyond your own lessons.

Opens with the matching teacher resume, in the same design, so the two read as a set.

The letter, as text

Dear Dr. Morrow,

Cedar Bluff Middle School’s science team is rebuilding its seventh- and eighth-grade curriculum around hands-on inquiry, and that kind of rebuild is the work I enjoy most. I am applying for the Grade 7–8 Science Teacher position opening this fall.

At Lakeview Middle School I teach five sections of life and physical science to about 140 students a year, including co-taught inclusion classes. Over three years, the share of my students meeting state science standards rose from 52% to 71%. That gain came from frequent formative checks, regrouping students by need, and labs where students design the investigation instead of following a recipe.

I also write curriculum that other teachers use. Twelve inquiry-based units I designed have been adopted across all six middle schools in my district. Outside the classroom, I founded a robotics club that has grown to 60 members and reached the state finals twice. Earlier, at Riverside Academy, I served on the school’s data team and introduced standards-based grading for the sixth-grade team.

I hold a Minnesota science license for grades 5–12 and an MEd in curriculum and instruction. I would welcome the chance to teach a demonstration lesson and to share a sample unit with your science team.

Sincerely,
Rachel Adams

Why this teacher cover letter works

  • It opens with the school’s own curriculum project, signaling that the candidate has researched the position.
  • The achievement result (52% to 71% meeting standards) is followed by the teaching methods behind it, which principals want to hear.
  • District-wide adoption of the candidate’s units and the robotics club show impact beyond one classroom.
  • Offering a demonstration lesson and sample unit matches how schools actually evaluate teachers.

Tips for your own teacher cover letter

  1. Include one measure of student growth, such as assessment results, proficiency rates or reading levels, and explain what you did to get there.
  2. Name the grade levels, subjects and class types you teach, including inclusion or co-taught classes.
  3. Mention one contribution outside your classroom, such as a club, curriculum work or a school committee.

Questions

How long should a teacher cover letter be?

Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 words, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim; every sentence should add proof the resume does not already give.

Do I need a cover letter for a teacher job?

Send one whenever the application allows it, unless the posting says not to. It is your chance to connect your experience to this employer’s needs, and many candidates skip it.

Can I use this cover letter for free?

Yes. Open it in the builder with the matching resume, replace the details with your own, and download both as PDF or Word, free, with no account and no watermark.
