Financial Analyst cover letter example
A financial analyst’s cover letter has to show that your forecasts are accurate, your models are used by leadership, and your analysis has changed how money is spent.
Opens with the matching financial analyst resume, in the same design, so the two read as a set.
The letter, as text
Dear Mr. Colefax,
Forecasts earn trust slowly and lose it in a single quarter. Peregrine Health Software is hiring a Senior Financial Analyst to own its revenue forecast ahead of a growth round, and keeping a forecast accurate is the work I know best.
At Carolina Software I own the $220M revenue forecast, which has landed within 2% of actuals for eight consecutive quarters. I also built the driver-based headcount model that leadership uses to plan $95M of annual personnel spend, so hiring plans and the revenue outlook now come from the same assumptions.
I like analysis that changes a decision. When I broke down marketing ROI by channel, we redirected $3.4M of spend and lowered acquisition cost by 17%. Before that, at Queen City Bank, I prepared the annual budget for 120 branches and built the branch profitability models that informed the consolidation of nine of them, saving $6.2M a year. More recently, I automated our monthly variance reporting in Power BI, which gives the team three extra days every close.
I am a CFA Level II candidate and work daily in Excel, SQL, Anaplan and NetSuite. I would be glad to walk you through how I structure a SaaS revenue forecast, and I am available for an interview any time next week.
Best regards,
Aaliyah Brooks
Why this financial analyst cover letter works
- The forecast accuracy streak (within 2% for eight quarters) is the single most persuasive fact for an FP&A hiring manager, and it comes first.
- Each example connects analysis to a decision and its result, such as $3.4M redirected and acquisition cost down 17%.
- The bank experience is presented as relevant modelling work rather than an unrelated earlier job.
- The close offers to explain the candidate’s forecasting method, inviting a substantive conversation.
Tips for your own financial analyst cover letter
- State your forecast accuracy as a range against actuals and over how many periods; it is the number FP&A leaders trust most.
- Give the size of the budget or forecast you own, so the reader can match your experience to their company.
- Include one analysis that redirected spending and say what changed as a result.
Questions
How long should a financial analyst cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 words, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim; every sentence should add proof the resume does not already give.
Do I need a cover letter for a financial analyst job?
Send one whenever the application allows it, unless the posting says not to. It is your chance to connect your experience to this employer’s needs, and many candidates skip it.
Can I use this cover letter for free?
Yes. Open it in the builder with the matching resume, replace the details with your own, and download both as PDF or Word, free, with no account and no watermark.
