Accountant cover letter example
An accountant’s cover letter has to prove accuracy and efficiency with evidence: a faster close, clean audits and command of the systems and standards the employer uses.
Opens with the matching accountant resume, in the same design, so the two read as a set.
The letter, as text
Dear Ms. Albright,
Granite Coast Brewing’s posting mentions a close that runs past day ten and a first audit since your recent acquisition. I have fixed both of those problems before, and I am applying for the Senior Accountant role on your controllership team.
At Bayside Manufacturing I lead the month-end close for a $180M business. When I took it over, the close took 10 working days; it now takes 5. A big part of that came from automating intercompany eliminations in NetSuite, which saves about 15 hours every close, and from tightening how we reconcile our 60-plus balance-sheet accounts each month.
Clean reconciliations show up at audit time. Bayside has had zero audit adjustments in each of the last two annual audits, and I prepare consolidated financial statements for three entities under US GAAP. I also understand the auditor’s side of the table: at Kendall & Moore CPAs I audited more than 25 clients in manufacturing, non-profit and retail with revenue from $5M to $300M, prepared over 120 tax returns during busy seasons, and trained six new associates on workpapers and testing.
I am a licensed CPA in Massachusetts. I would welcome the chance to discuss your close calendar and the integration work ahead, and I can start with three weeks’ notice.
Sincerely,
Michael Chen
Why this accountant cover letter works
- It names two specific pain points from the posting and promises to solve them, then delivers proof for each.
- Close time (10 to 5 days) and audit adjustments (zero, twice) are the two numbers controllers care about most, and both are here.
- The audit background is framed as an advantage, understanding the auditor’s view, rather than as a past job.
- Licensure is stated plainly near the end, where a controller will look for it.
Tips for your own accountant cover letter
- Give your close timeline before and after, the size of the business and the number of entities you consolidate.
- Mention your audit record, such as adjustments or findings, because it is the clearest evidence of accuracy.
- Name the ERP and accounting standard you work in (NetSuite, US GAAP) and say what you automated with it.
Questions
How long should an accountant cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 words, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim; every sentence should add proof the resume does not already give.
Do I need a cover letter for an accountant job?
Send one whenever the application allows it, unless the posting says not to. It is your chance to connect your experience to this employer’s needs, and many candidates skip it.
Can I use this cover letter for free?
Yes. Open it in the builder with the matching resume, replace the details with your own, and download both as PDF or Word, free, with no account and no watermark.
