UX Designer cover letter example
A UX cover letter has to show that your design decisions came from research and produced a measurable change in behaviour, not just a nicer-looking screen.
Opens with the matching UX designer resume, in the same design, so the two read as a set.
The letter, as text
Dear Johan Ekdahl,
Kvist Mobility’s booking app has a loyal user base and, judging by recent store reviews, a checkout flow that people keep mentioning. As a product designer with six years in mobility and fintech, I would like to help solve that as your next Senior Product Designer.
At Fleetly I took our booking flow from research to launch. After a year of interviews and usability tests, we rebuilt the steps where people abandoned the booking or called support. Support tickets fell by 52% and the app rating climbed from 3.9 to 4.6. I also built Fleetly’s design system in Figma with design tokens, which cut handoff time to engineering by about 40% and made later changes far cheaper to ship.
Before that, at Kronan Bank, I redesigned mobile onboarding so that fewer customers gave up during identity verification; drop-off fell from 38% to 19%. I also led our work to meet EN 301 549, including screen-reader flows for every core journey, so accessibility is part of how I design rather than a final check. I run more than 70 interviews and usability tests a year and set up a research repository that teams across Fleetly now use.
I would be happy to walk your team through the Fleetly booking case study, including the research findings that changed our direction. I am based in Stockholm and can visit your office on any day that suits you.
Kind regards,
Leah Bergström
Why this UX designer cover letter works
- It opens with an observation about the employer’s own product, which proves the candidate has looked closely at it.
- Both proof points follow the same arc, research to redesign to result, with the numbers that matter to a product team (tickets, ratings, drop-off).
- The accessibility standard and research repository show maturity beyond screen design.
- The close invites a case-study walkthrough, which is how design hiring actually proceeds.
Tips for your own UX designer cover letter
- Pick one flow you redesigned and give the business metric it changed, such as completion rate, tickets or rating, rather than describing your process in general.
- Mention the research volume and methods you use so the reader knows your decisions are evidence-based.
- Point to a specific case study in your portfolio by name, so the reviewer knows exactly which project to open first.
Questions
How long should a UX designer cover letter be?
Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 words, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim; every sentence should add proof the resume does not already give.
Do I need a cover letter for a UX designer job?
Send one whenever the application allows it, unless the posting says not to. It is your chance to connect your experience to this employer’s needs, and many candidates skip it.
Can I use this cover letter for free?
Yes. Open it in the builder with the matching resume, replace the details with your own, and download both as PDF or Word, free, with no account and no watermark.
