Paralegal cover letter example

A paralegal’s cover letter has to reassure attorneys that you will never miss a deadline, can manage large volumes of documents and know the practice area they work in.

Opens with the matching paralegal resume, in the same design, so the two read as a set.

The letter, as text

Dear Ms. Brandt,

Brandt Kessler’s employment litigation group is growing, and a growing docket is where deadlines get missed. I would like to join the team as a Senior Litigation Paralegal and bring the systems that have kept my record clean.

At Whitfield Hale LLP I support four partners on more than 40 active commercial and employment matters in state and federal courts. Soon after joining, I built a docket-tracking process that cross-checks every court deadline, and we have not missed one since 2021. I also manage e-discovery in Relativity for productions of up to 500,000 documents, which has taught me how to keep large reviews organized under tight timelines.

Trial preparation is the part of the job I enjoy most. I have prepared exhibits and trial materials for six trials, including one that ended in a $14M jury verdict for our client. Before that, at Morgan & Reyes, P.C., I drafted pleadings, subpoenas and discovery requests for attorney review and summarized more than 150 depositions and sets of medical records for personal-injury cases.

I am comfortable in Westlaw and Clio and hold an ABA-approved paralegal certificate. I would welcome a conversation about your group’s current caseload and can provide a sample deposition summary on request.

Sincerely,
Sarah O’Connell

Why this paralegal cover letter works

  • It speaks directly to an attorney’s biggest fear, missed deadlines, and backs the claim with a multi-year record.
  • Caseload and document volumes (40+ matters, 500,000 documents) show the candidate can handle a busy practice.
  • Mentioning trial work and a $14M verdict signals experience all the way through litigation, not just discovery.
  • Offering a writing sample is a practical step that suits how law firms evaluate paralegals.

Tips for your own paralegal cover letter

  1. Name your practice areas and courts, because a litigation partner wants someone who already knows their procedures.
  2. Give your caseload and the largest document review you have managed, including the platform you used.
  3. Describe how you track deadlines in one sentence; a concrete system is more convincing than saying you are detail-oriented.

Questions

How long should a paralegal cover letter be?

Three or four short paragraphs, about 250 words, never more than one page. Hiring managers skim; every sentence should add proof the resume does not already give.

Do I need a cover letter for a paralegal job?

Send one whenever the application allows it, unless the posting says not to. It is your chance to connect your experience to this employer’s needs, and many candidates skip it.

Can I use this cover letter for free?

Yes. Open it in the builder with the matching resume, replace the details with your own, and download both as PDF or Word, free, with no account and no watermark.
